J- JUST FAIL FORWARD JULY: Have I Failed Enough?
U- Uncover your weaknesses.
L- Learn new things.
Y- You are a Champion.
WHERE ARE YOUR MISTAKE CLUES?
“It’s fine to celebrate success but it’s more important to heed the lessons of failure”. Bill Gates.
For everyone, irrespective of your location, July should signify a season for reviewing what worked and what didn’t work in the first half of the year.
I would like to encourage you to review the first half of your year with a slightly different perspective. Instead of looking for the typical success clues, of victories and wins -ask yourself this simple question? HAVE I FAILED ENOUGH?
If you don’t have evidence of a lot of misses, and mistakes, perhaps you didn’t venture too far off your comfort zone. Did you stretch yourself? Or did you sit within your safety net doing the same things you did last year?
LAUNCH INTO THE DEEP.
Are you expecting to achieve outstanding results at the end of this year? Do you have any BBHAGs? – “Big Bold Hairy Audacious Goals.” If you do, are you going to accomplish them without launching into the deep?
Remember Peter and his attempt to walk on water? Today, he has the glorious accolade of being called a “water walker”, and although he became afraid once he took his eyes of his BBHAG, he at least ventured where his colleagues who stayed in the safety of their boat failed to thread. Today his comfort zone friends form part of the commentary of that story. Peter failed forward, and so should you.
July is the month to launch out into the deep, in every aspect of your life and business. Don’t wait until the rains stop or for the end of the summer. Start today. Don’t put off those dreams that have kept you awake. Start today. Don’t worry about the contrary winds. Start today. Launch out towards those goals that you set at the beginning of the year or in times past. Take a ‘faulty step’ towards the life you have always dreamed of. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. That’s an excuse for comfort zone players.
TIPS FOR FAILING FORWARD
ACTION + LESSONS LEARNT & APPLIED = FAIL FORWARD JULY.
Just in case you are wondering how to fail forward, here are a few practical things you could do this week:
– Shortlist and call your topmost clients that would make a big difference to your targets and ensure you set an appointment to meet them face-to-face.
– How about reviewing your personal or business finances and identifying where you could make some adjustments the rest of this year? Perhaps failing forward would be to cut out the “summer holidays”? Learning from your earlier overspending mistakes? Maybe?
In the first case, what if the first few people turn you down? Do you stop? No. You ask as many questions of them as you can get away with, or of the situation (failing forward is about analysis and re-calibrating), and as you find out either independently or otherwise. It may be even by engaging an independent third party, a colleague even. You should be able to isolate some lessons and attempt to approach the next person differently. Perhaps with a different pitch or value proposition? Or maybe even solicit a referral? Or seek out the best place to get them in a relaxed mode?
Sometimes, it’s just a change of strategy, other times it is just a change of timing, or even who does the asking. Only last week, we re-approached a client who had previously declined to a service on terms we proposed, and they subsequently indicated that the approach we adopted in communicating the value was totally different, and the timing of the new discussion also made a difference to their new decision to engage us. As I shared in my post last week (read it here), sometimes there’s not much you can do differently, but even knowing that is itself a lesson. Just remember to be honest with yourself. Invariably, however there are usually lessons to be learnt which propel you forward.
I hope you choose to take massive ignited steps this month in order to unlock the incredible possibilities that you and I know lie ahead in 2014. Even in the midst of all the tough news all around us, this isn’t time to faint.
To your success and unlimited possibilities for the rest of the year.
DEFINITION: Failing forward simply means taking deliberate and sometimes scary action. It means taking single but focused steps at time which are capable of moving you toward your dreams. These are steps that although well thought through, may cause you to falter. However, you must NOT stop. You MUST review and analyse your action, extract the lessons to be learned, and then re-adjust for your next launch…..whatever you do, you must keep on moving in the direction of your dreams. I repeat – Fail, Review, Analyse, Re-calibrate, but Relaunch. DO NOT STOP!

Tomorrow on TYCOON TUESDAY, please look out for the incredible lessons from the recent WIMBIZ roundtable where I share some great insights from Bukky George on how she is successfully building Health Plus, a home grown Nigerian brand and the first and largest retail pharmacy in West Africa. Exciting stuff. You don’t want to miss it. I took loads of notes just for you.
***I had the honour of representing the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Economy as a special guest of honour on Saturday. Find out what event and how I fared on TGIFFriday (Thank God it’s Fantastic Friday) and what I shared…(big shoes to fill I tell you.)
