The reason I write TYCOON SERIES is to help growing entrepreneurs like you to create the Ignited Businesses of your dreams. An Ignited Business is a business where you can serve your clients with utmost dedication while earning excellent profit and enjoying an incredibly balanced lifestyle. It is what I like to call the Ignited Tycoon lifestyle, a business which is not done at the cost of your personal core value/belief system, at the expense of the things and people you hold dear, your health or your sense of well being.
It is possible to have and grow a business which serves your clients with utmost diligence and excellence, keeping them insanely in love with you, while they pay for the life you desire. This is only possible in dreamland. However, the exciting thing about dreams is that you can create your own.
Last week, I dealt with setting clear goals about the kind of clientele you want to have in order to be successful in 2014. Now if you are satisfied with backbreaking, hardened, tough clients that pay you peanuts and demand your blood, be my guest. But if you, like me, want to be an Ignited Tycoon, generating great amounts of revenue and profit (the two are different), then this year, you must commit to choosing the kinds of clients to work for and the ones to tell- See Ya Later !
Last year I said good bye to a few clients with lots of joy and a clean conscience.
Here is a list of the characteristics of clients you need to say goodbye to in 2014 if you want to ignite your profits and lifestyle.
1. Clients who don’t pay for your goods and services on time. Start running.
2. Clients who don’t understand win-win and want to win at your expense, negotiating deals that leave you feeling devalued. Run fast.
3. Clients who never seem to appreciate or see the value you bring. Run far.
4. Clients who don’t ever seem to know what they want even when you give them 100 options. It’s usually a ploy to get freebies. Run faster.
5. Clients who have all the time in the world and want you to spend all your time on them without compensation. Run fastest.
6. Clients whose only feedback is nonstop complaint, non-constructive criticism and given usually in your absence. Run run run.
7. Clients who are unduly violent in their language, mannerism, or volatile. Flee!
The toughest thing about working for Non-KP clients is that they drain you of useful energy that can be reserved for people you love and who love you.
The biggest advantage of working for the right clients, KPs, is that they are easy to love and serve. When you are in love as a business person, you become ignited and will go out of your way to serve your clients. The extra mile becomes like the ‘next door mile’, easy to attain because you are in love.
Conversely, working for Non-KPs feels you with dread as you are unlikely to ever be able to satisfy them, at best achieving only marginal results. Usually it’s because it is not a match. Their needs as clients and your products and services are not aligned or your values are not aligned. Sometimes it is because you are desperate to please when you start off, and are afraid you may not attract other clients. It is almost like an abusive relationship, you know it is wrong, but you choose to ignore it and most times it comes back to haunt you.
If you are currently working for clients that you dread, you can trace your ‘isolated’ poor results in a lot of cases to their energy. Call it quits but be sure you are not just running away from being diligent and painstaking. Clarify your values, and your services upfront, then decide the DNA of the clients that best fit what you are great at and fall in love again or call it quits.
Make profitable music this 2014. That’s what Ignited Tycoons do when they are in love.
PS: Next week, I will deal with why you are attracting the wrong clients and what you can do to attract the right ones and ignite an amazing 2014 bottom line.
