Your biggest breakthrough in life will come through your breakthrough in belief. Not technology or skills. Brendon Bruchard. Jan 2014
And so earlier this year, I embarked on a journey to Be More. Do More and Have More. That quite simply was my biggest hairiest, most audacious goal. Audacious, because I realised that the quest to be more, do more and have more required absolute clarity, certainly more clarity than I had been accustomed to. When you decide you want to be more, a few key questions arise:
- Who am I?
- Why do you want to be more?
- What does ‘being more’ look like?
I realised that being more for me required time out to dig deeper, so that my decisions are not clouded by the noise of life’s legitimate demands. After taking time out early in January, I found that being more for me was much simpler than I would have ordinarily thought. I realised that once I realised who I am, what I want to do and have became much easier. I realised the following and I hope it helps someone reading this to get some perspective on their own journey also:
I am a human ‘being’ with loads of potential and unlimited possibilities open to me. I however realise I am bound by my life’s many challenges, and limitations, including limited time, limited resources, limited access, finances..there’s so much I don’t have and may never have. I however realise that, I am extremely positive and absolutely determined to live life fully, without feeling bound by the all the constraints of life’s demands and limitations.
- I am more, when I have choice.
- I am more when I am learning new practical lessons that I can use and share with others, especially people who want to live beyond their obvious limitations.
- I am more when I have enough time to share my wisdom.
- I am more when I am serving others, and adding significant value in my area of passion and expertise with new ideas whether in business, or in their personal lives.
- I am more when I refuse to be bound by my challenges, and design a life that serves my deepest desire- To Live Fully and on Purpose.
Being more for me is the freedom to “learn” “teach” and “do business” on my own terms. Once I realised that simply choosing to be deliberate in what was important to me, was “Being More”, my life took on a whole new meaning in 2014. I decided since I could be more, I would definitely “Do More” and by doing more, it’s easier to “Have More”.
This year, I embarked on multiple learning opportunities: from a High Performance Leadership program at Oxford SAID Business School, to two management courses in Branding and Strategic Marketing at Cambridge University. I also attended a course for Professionals/Experts/Speakers/Trainers/Consultants in the UK at the beginning of the year that helped give me further clarity and develop new business products to be launched in 2015.
Personal: In addition to learning so actively, and reading multiple books this year (the Strategist by …. And Success is not an Accident by…..being my top titles this year), I also committed to and executed numerous projects that left me feeling like a multi billionaire (even though they had no financial rewards attached to them). A few of them are, ‘Ignite the Champion Within” a transformational personal development and business mindset series for professionals and entrepreneurs; the launch of Dazzle Breakfast Series for women both in Lagos and London. The numerous speaking engagements culminating in the Walk on Water presentation at Access Bank, and the Tribute to Dr. Myles Munroe at The Waterbrook and This Present House remain memorable.
Business: From a business point of view, we won some incredibly rewarding mandates from very high profile clients, along with multiple international and local accolades. Some of the awards include the African Real Estate Personality award, the Luxury Living Award for best Real Estate Firm in Nigeria, the Frankfurt based Arch of Europe for Excellence and Quality award to mention a few. Our publicly known business mandates speak for themselves. Others are confidential.
The addition of more experienced new people to my business also enabled me do more.
Oh, and of course the Zumbathon in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness which our company co-sponsored along with the Eti-Osa (Lagos State) Teachers Training program we co-sponsored with Lagoon Secondary School. What a privilege to support great causes.
And to top it all off, from a family point of view, 2014 brought with it an admission to university for my first daughter, along with settling in our first son into a senior school for boys. And to think the year is not even done yet.
What a joy to realise that by being more, by clarifying who and why I am, by defining exactly how I want to live life, it led to my being able to do more and focus on what was important, which in turn led to my having more. More joy, more laughter, more freedom, more peace of mind, more time with my family and the community activities that matter to me, more profitable clients, more sense of purpose, more confidence about a brighter future and more fulfilment seeing lives transformed through some of the platforms I was involved in. It’s simply amazing to me, that seemingly without effort, this year is ending on a high note, not because I have banked millions of dollars (that is taken for granted..or is it? ), but because I have what you might refer to as the ultimate blessing – “CONTENTMENT”.
Contentment can only come by being deliberate about who you are, what you want, and how much you what. To have more. Do more. To do more, Be more. Be clear as we approach 2015. Who do you want to be in 2015? What do you want to do? What do you want to have and why? These should guide all strategic goal setting whether as an individual or as a business. Life outside of a clear purpose is too limiting.
Our greatest fear should not be failure. Be afraid of succeeding at something that has no real significance. Imagine getting to the end of a ladder and finding out you were climbing the wrong one all along! What a disaster.
