The Goal is NOT to BE Rich, but to LIVE Rich.”
In these days of intense pressure, discouragement and distress due to a combination of local, economic and even global factors, it’s become more important to encourage people to adopt a richer perspective of life. Hope deferred, makes the heart sick. And when people lose hope completely, ‘death, and in some cases ‘while still living’ is the logical next step. As we embrace a new season, a fresh quarter of the year, I could share many things but I’d prefer to encourage a fresh approach to life. I share below 3 Practical Ways to Live Rich and avoid dis-ease.
WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE GET, BUT WE MAKE A ‘LIFE’ BY WHAT WE GIVE. Those words by Winston Churchill make a lot of sense especially in a world where many are in desperate search to accumulate wealth and power at all costs. It’s far better to seek ways to become a giver. Look for ways to serve the world with your gifts and resources. Start with your close community of friends, work colleagues, and as opportunities arise to serve outside your immediate circle, accept them. If you have enough resources, create those opportunities to give through foundations and similar initiatives like the ANAP Foundation (by Atedo Peterside on Governance, the Access W, the TEEP initiative by Tony Elumelu, WARIF by Kemi Ibru, Bethesda Child Support by Mrs. Nkoyo Rapu, She Writes Woman by Hauwa helping people diagnosed with mental illness, and so many others. Focus on the outcome of your service, not on what you stand to gain. The richest people on earth are those who’ve found a way to serve the world in ways that fill them with joy. The work myself and other women do with the Inspired Women of Worth is a life giving service. So is my writing on social media and sharing life lessons through this blog. It feels me with incredible joy, leaves me completely energised and better equipped to do business with purpose and focus. Hearing the testimonies of women and men, who find their voices, discover their life’s purpose, and launch into deeper waters is the most fulfilling thing I do beyond real estate. Building lives is certainly more empowering for me than building property. Building lives makes me feel like a billionaire in multiple currencies and is invaluable. I wouldn’t find any joy in business without an opportunity to serve in other ways. Today, I’d like to challenge you. What is it that you can do that makes you feel so rich? Is it writing? Teaching teenagers? Helping elderly people? Contributing to creating governance structures? Coaching growing businesses? Showing love to those who struggle? Being light in dark situations by encouraging others with positive words? Find a sure way to live richer this new season.
HAPPINESS IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SUCCESS. True happiness comes not by what you HAVE but by WHO you are. To DO or HAVE more, we have do BE MORE. We were created as Human BE-INGS, crafted with an internal wiring that makes us seek to discover and BE who we really are. “The desperation of our lives really starts when we start ignoring who we truly were created to be, and instead become what the world wants us to be. ” What if instead of asking people, what do you do, we ask them, who are you? How are you? That’s become my preferred way of meeting people. Let them search deep and say something about who and how they truly are, not what they do. What you do should flow from who you are. The inconsistency of who we are, how we are and what we are doing, leads to a lack of alignment leading many to despair. When we are out of alignment, we create DIS- EASE in our bodies, and spirits. The advent of social media, publicly show casing our worldly accomplishments, without knowing who we really are compounds this growing dis-ease. Know Thyself is a wise admonition by philosopher Socrates. Be Thyself is even wiser. It’s only in knowing, accepting Thyself and Be-Ing Thyself that we truly find happiness. Let’s encourage our children too, and younger people to really discover themselves, and be who they are, there in lies super power. Rather than trying to use them as showpieces for our egos. Who are you? Let’s remove the masks of job titles, and societal labels that seek to box us into a one size fits all mode, failing which we feel we are nothing. We are MORE than our bank accounts, marital titles or work titles. BE MORE!
DON’T BE PUSHED BY YOUR PROBLEMS. BE INSPIRED AND LED BY YOUR DREAMS. Design the life of your dreams. Stop complaining, comparing or competing with people who don’t even know you exist ( this was a lesson from Aunt Mo Belo Olusoga at the recent IWOW summit, brave, yet gentle, beautiful and Wonder Woman who sits as chair of Access Pls – (note I described who she is before what she does). Don’t allow your current circumstances become the determining factor and detrimental to your tomorrow. Learn to use the power of perspective to take the bite out of your immediate tough situations. Learn to say, I’m not where I want to be -Yet! I don’t have what I want – Yet! I don’t understand it- Yet! It hasn’t worked out for me – Yet! You have the power to design the life you want, by choosing your language, emotions and therefor decisions deliberately. It’s not our problems or opportunities that determine how we end up, but our perspectives and responses to them. When you face a tough situation, as most of us are currently facing, how will you respond? With despair or with a decision to win? Will you be led by your dreams or driven to destruction? You have what it takes to win. You have the right response wired inside of you, reach out to others to help you tap into it whenever you feel unable to cope. Don’t ever permit yourself the luxury of self-pity, or self-defeat. You are divinely inspired to be victorious. I pray you receive the grace to actually live Rich.
Answer this question: WHAT CAN I DO TO LIVE RICH? Who can I reach out to today to give love, support, encourage and empower. Everyone could use encouragement. You never know whose life you are saving.
To your success. Live Fully!
Ps. Despite all the challenges of the first quarter, I ended the first quarter of 2017, feeling completely rich, like a true billionaire in multiple high-value currencies. The IWOW (Inspired Women of Worth) which I along with other women started in 2010 in Johannesburg, has now become a vehicle for inspiring, encouraging, empowering, equipping and connecting women to their best selves and with each other to do a world of good. The annual gathering of more than 200 women over two days, with top business leaders, coaches, trainers in a high energy, nurturing, and inspiring environment held on the 31st of March and April 1st in Lagos. Photos and full details in the next edition of my newsletter.
