SUCCESS MIND-SET: LIFE LESSONS FROM THE WORLD CUP – GHANA VS. GERMANY AND THE NIGERIA VS. BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA MATCH
Mind power is critical for championship play whether in football, business or life.” – Udo Okonjo, June 21 2014.
I must admit that I am not a big football enthusiast, and the Ghana versus Germany match was the very first football game I have ever watched past a few seconds – even though I officially lived in South Africa during the last World Cup in 2010 – ( I know it’s unbelievable!) -I’m hiding my face.
GHANA V GERMANY…Mind Power is a critical success factor.
Anyhow, what I found interesting from watching the first few minutes of the Ghana and Germany match on Saturday night was how similar the game of football is to life. That simple fact made me really sit up and actually take lesson notes during the game…yes – while the enthusiasts were busy holding their hearts, screaming their heads off at every possible move or potential goal; I was taking notes.

Here’s my short Facebook status update just after the Ghana game:“Mental strength won Germans the equalizer. Ghana could have won with a stronger mental capacity to take on that third goal…..sigh!“Mind power is critical for championship play whether in football, business or life.” Udo Okonjo
Kudos though Black stars. You were still fantastic…
Ghana – Germany game June 21/14
NIGERIA V BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
….Optimism is a Winning Currency.
As for the Nigerian game, here is my Facebook update before the game started:
“Nigeria – Bosnia H Game. Is Hope a Strategy?
The currency we are spending here is optimism, says the TV commentator.
Is that enough????
Waiting with baited breathe!”
Clearly, the currency of optimism bought us victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, enough to keep us in the game and has given Nigeria something to celebrate.
Key Lesson: Germany was perceived as a much better team because of their track record, discipline and resources. Ghana however chose to believe they had a chance irrespective of what others thought.
Winning starts with believing. Self belief is the biggest determinant of success.
– Never think anyone or brand is better than you. Respect your opponents or competitors but never undervalue yourself.
Even when you are winning, or leading, keep your focus and determination.
Never lose concentration irrespective of the pressure of the game or the pressure of life.
Don’t underestimate anyone. It can be anyone’s game.
– Stay humble. Stay hungry.
– Be prepared always and stay 100% ready for when an opportunity presents itself. At the end of his game, the Ghanaian captain Gyan said, “we came here to win. We all fought. We believed in ourselves.
Whatever happens we are focused on the next game”.I say, well said Captain!
On a final note however, when you have won, celebrate by all means, but stay focused on the ultimate prize.
“It’s never over until you have the World Cup in your hands or whatever your ultimate goal is, whether in life, business or in football.”I hope you find these simple lessons applicable as you embark on what I pray will be a truly blessed and productive week ahead.
To your success.
P.S. KEEP DAZZLING: Kudos to all the wonderful women who came out for the Inspired Women of Worth (I-WOW) – Dazzle Women’s breakfast last Saturday June 14th at Oriental Hotel. It was a truly dazzling and inspiring experience, with many women feeling inspired, reenergized and empowered for the next level.
It’s truly a gift to be able to use your gifts beyond work and business. I encourage you to find ways of extending your brilliance this week beyond your work. You have a unique gift and quality that could light up the world. I’m confident of that. Use it.
